#CelebNews First Institute of Hip Hop Entrepreneurship Set To Open In Philadelphia This Fall

It’s one thing to learn how to make music like Dr. Dre. But it’s another to learn how to get money like him. The Institute of Hip-Hop Entrepreneurship hopes to teach the latter.

Created by Little Giant Branding agency co-founder Tayib Smith [pictured], the Institute of Hip-Hop Entrepreneurship will be a nine week program offering weekend courses where students will be learning from and working alongside entrepreneurs, musicians and technologists, who will teach courses infused with their own experiences. No lectures, no traditional tests.

Instead of working towards getting a good grade, students will be molded into being able to pitch their business ideas to investors. The school will be geared towards people who have the ambition to succeed, but come from underserved communities.

CNN reports that Smith is still in the early stages of getting the program running, but is expecting the first class of 36 students to be ready by this fall. The institute was recently awarded a grant of $308,000 by the Knight Foundation, which specializes in funding innovative concepts designed to improve underserved communities.

IHHE is the latest effort where Hip-Hop related businessmen are using education to improve lives. Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine made headlines for founding an academy named after them at the University of Southern California that will push students into careers in technology and business. Sean “Diddy” Combs also entered the education arena recently by announcing that he was opening a charter school in Harlem.

#CelebNews 50 Cent’s Power Season 3 Air Date Revealed!

50 Cent has another reason to brag. His hit television show Power is set to return to the small screen on July 17.

The Queens rapper/entrepreneur made the announcement on social media via his Twitter page.

The self-proclaimed “best show on TV” is entering its third season after a record breaking second season two premiere. That episode of Power earned the title of being the Starz network most-watched episode of an original series.

The show is also making some changes. It will be moving from its usual Saturday night slot to Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST. This season will consist of 10 one-hour episodes.

Initially 50 Cent mocked FOX’s Empire to bring attention to the show. But, the show has been able to perform well with no gimmicks. The show may even be fairing better than Empire these days as their second season was met with mixed reviews for most of the year.

#CelebNews The Game To Star In New A&E Television Series The Streets Of Compton

The Game is returning to your televisions this summer to star in A&E’s 3-part docuseries Streets Of Compton.
Fresh off of celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his debut album The Documentary and the success of its 2016 sequel, The Game is sticking to the script he’s created for himself.
This June he will be staring in A&E’s Streets Of Compton documentary series.
Per release:
Streets of Compton chronicles the city’s history and illustrates how the iconic music, culture and style that came out of the area in the ‘80s and early ‘90s were influenced by the drugs, gangs and political turmoil of the time. Additional exclusive interviews with current and former Compton residents include actress Niecy Nash, comedian Paul Rodriguez and musicians Lil Eazy-E, DJ Yella, Arabian Prince, DJ Speed, Tha Chill, MC Eiht, AD, Payso and Problem. The Game’s mother Lynette Baker, father G.A. Taylor and manager Cash Jones as well as Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams and former Black Panther Robert Johnson are also interviewed. Other Compton notables featured in the docuspecial include Mayor Aja Brown, former mayors Omar Bradley and Eric Perrodin; former Compton Councilwoman Patricia Moore, members of the Compton police department gang unit; gang experts and many more.
Similar to how his mentor Dr. Dre created the Compton album to be a soundtrack to Straight Outta Compton, The Game will be dropping an 11-track album to accompany film.
This is The Game’s latest foray into television. From 2012 to 2014 he starred in his own reality show, Marrying The Game on Vh1. And how could we forget his television debut on Change Of Heart in 2000.

#CelebNews Lil Wayne Gets His Own VH1 Reality Series!

Lil Wayne will now join the dozens of entertainers and celebrities before him with the announcement of his own unscripted television series. The show, Lil Wayne’s House, will reportedly air on VH1 at a later unconfirmed date according to an artist on the Young Money label.

HHDX reports:

The news of the show comes via Young Money’s Stephanie Acevedo, who speaks in a Facebook video with plastic surgeon Dr. Miami about the venture.

“We just got a contract with VH1,” she says. “We’re going to be doing a reality show that we’re gonna be shooting in July in LA.”

Acevedo gives insight into the storyline of the program, which seemingly will feature the Young Money roster. Other artists signed to the label, besides heavyweights Drake and Nicki Minaj, include Chanel West Coast, Cory Gunz, Lil Twist and Mack Maine.

“It’s just basically us coming together as artists,” she says, “as a family, collaborating. Wayne’s gonna be our mentor.”

Young Tunechi has exhibited comfort in front of the camera in recent ads for Samsung and the like, and his personality has shined via his Weezy Wednesday video blog. Time will tell if Lil Wayne’s House will be a smash, but the concept of the show does appear promising.

#CelebNews Drake Is Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist, Takes Out Justin Bieber!

Spotify, one of the many popular music streaming services vying for listeners’ attention, confirmed Wednesday that Canadian superstar Drake is its most streamed musical artist. The 6 God took out Justin Bieber from holding that top spot formerly and the music service is celebrating other high marks as well.

As reported by Billboard, numbers found on the analytics aggregator Kworb helped solidify news that Drizzy blew past Bieber in the wake of the release of his latest Views record. Spotify confirmed the numbers to Billboard yesterday (May 18) and also boasted of 1 billion streams for its in-house curated playlists.

From Billboard:

The milestone is especially impressive given the limited time that the whole of Drake’s new record, Views, has been available on the platform — less than a week. Its first two weeks were spent as an Apple Music exclusive, yielding a streaming record of 245.1 million listens in the U.S. during the record’s first tracking week. (That sum includes plays of the album’s songs on Apple Music, as well as the handful of songs from the set that were available at other streaming services like Spotify.) Views quickly sold more than a million copies (1.03 million) in two weeks’ time, and it is the first album released in 2016 to surpass 1 million copies sold. Only two albums have sold more than a million this year: Views, and Adele’s 25, which was released in 2015. In other Spotify milemarkers, the company has announced that its in-house playlists are generating over 1 billion streams a week. The curated lists include Rap Caviar, Baila Reggaeton, Get Turnt , Teen Party and Exitos de Hoy, among others.

Congratulations to Drake!

#CelebNews Lil Kim & Faith Evans end Beef For Bad Boy Reunion Tour!

Time seems to heal all wounds. Faith Evans and Lil Kim appear to have buried the hatchet 20 years after it was found out Kim was sleeping with Evans’ late husband The Notorious B.I.G.

When Sean “Diddy” Combs announced the 20th Anniversary Bad Boy Reunion concerts and then the tour that will follow, many wondered if all of the former artists on the label would put aside their beefs with the label founder. But, one conflict seemed to be overshadowed in the excitement. The one between Faith Evans and Lil Kim. According to an Instagram video posted by Faith, it seems like all is well, at least for now and for the tour.

You can see Evans playing the hypewoman for Lil Kim as she raps her lyrics on the 1995 Junior Mafia hit “Get Money.” The irony in the clip is that Kim’s lyrics were always assumed to be directed at Big for his cheating ways, and on top of that Biggie’s other other mistress Charli Baltimore was featured in the music video for the song.

The history between these two goes back over two decades as Lil Kim was mentored by Evans’ husband The Notorious B.I.G. It had always been rumored that Lil Kim and Biggie were more than just musical allies and Evans found the truth with her own eyes [and hands] when she found Lil Kim in bed with her husband.

Evans detailed the night she found out in her 2008 memoir Keep The Faith.

#CelebNews Rick Ross To Launch Wingstop Scholarship Program!

Rick Ross, rapper and franchiser, has announced a partnership with the Wingstop Foundation to award scholarships to young people from urban areas, as well as Wingstop employees.

Ross tells Bossip:

“To me, a company as huge as Wingstop, we’ve seen so much success doing what we’re doing, let’s take it to the next level. Let’s make ourselves that much more a part of the community…We see the drop out rates. We know what’s going on. So what’s the biggest thing that we could do? Wingstop as a company came together and put together an urban scholarship that’s for the underprivileged, that’s educationally based. That’s me talking to my audience. We need to hear this, and we need to bring all these ideas and concepts to the table and start as soon as possible.”

The Wingstop Foundation will award scholarships to young people from urban areas, as well as Wingstop employees, to pursue higher education. The nonprofit will also give grants to groups working to stop students from dropping out through education and mentoring.

According to education advocacy group Grad Nation, high school graduation rates for low-income students are 74.6 percent, 14 percentage points lower than their non-low income peers, who graduate at a rate of 89 percent.

And the high school drop out rate for urban youth now stands at 54 percent. Rick Ross is currently signed to Epic Records after ending a 10-year contract with Def Jam Records. Forbes reports that Ross earns at least seven figures from his Wingstop franchises.

#CelebNews The Grammys Are NOW Considering A Category For Free Music

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, better known as The Grammys, are actually considering a category for free music.

The International Business Times is reporting that the The Grammys is considering revising their policy that only music available for commercial release [i.e. for sale, for money] can win the award.

But with free music, mainly mixtapes, making a roads for critically-acclaimed artists like Chance the Rapper to become popular, fans have begun to pressure the Academy to recognize them.

IBN reports:
The organization that runs the Grammy Awards said Monday it would consider revising its eligibility requirements in the wake of a growing effort to boost industry recognition for free music. Under its current rules, the Recording Academy only considers music released “commercially” and distributed in the United States to be eligible for Grammys, but the organization said it reevaluates its nominating process and considers changes to its categories every year.
“The Grammy Awards process is fluid and, like music, continues to evolve,” an academy spokesperson told International Business Times in an email. “As a peer-voted award, the awards process is also peer-determined. Each spring, music creators in the community work with Recording Academy staff to prepare and submit proposals, which are then reviewed by the Board and announced shortly thereafter.”

This announcement comes days after an online petition on Change.org titled Allow Free Music To Be Eligible For Grammy Nomination began circulating. A link to the petition was also tweeted out by Chance the Rapper. Despite reports, he did not create the campaign himself.
The petition written by Max Krasowitz says:
Ridiculously talented artists who are releasing free mixtapes and projects are not getting the recognition they truly deserve because the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences insists that to be eligible for a prestigious Grammy Award that the music must be “commercially released in general distribution in the United States, i.e. sales by label to a branch or recognized independent distributor, via the Internet, or mail order/retail sales for a nationally marketed product.
Hip-Hop by and large is perhaps the only genre where free music is common. Free mixtapes have built the careers of artists like Future, Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and many others. But, is this something that Hip-Hop really thinks it wants? Who’s to say that even with the rules being changed, that the Grammys, who will most likely consist of the same voters, won’t just find a way to reward the usual suspects?

If Eminem or Macklamore decides that they want to drop a mixtape, you don’t think they will win that Best Free Mixtape Album of the Year Award too? If the Grammy’s change the rules, will Free Music become it’s own genre with different categories? Or will it be a situation where rap, rock and pop music will be lumped together resulting in a free Katy Perry project sponsored by Cover Girl that wins the award?

The Association says that the revisions are being considered for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards and will announce changes, if any, in June.
